Photo-Drawing Merge

Within the old site layout, I quickly came to a point of not being certain whether a tutorial belonged in PS Basics or PS Techniques – the fine line that separates the two becomes ever more fine.

This tutorial is no different – while you’ll be learning more about Layer Masks, which constitutes a PS Basic, you’ll also be learning an effect that Photoshop produces remarkably well – the effect of a drawing, which constitutes a PS Technique. So anyway, here we are.

We’ll be using layer masks to create the effect of a photograph “merging” into a drawing. Pretty quick and definitely cool.

Difficulty Level: Beginner - Intermediate Time Needed: 10-20 Minutes

Open Image

Open an image of your choice in Photoshop, or grab the stock photo (from Comstock.com) I’ll be using here.

2

Duplicate

Duplicate the layer (Layer, Duplicate Layer) and name it “Drawing” (Right-click the new layer and choose “Layer Properties”, rename).

3

Default Colors

Make sure that your foreground color is black and your background color is white before beginning to use the Filters.

4

Sketch Filter

Select “Filter, Sketch, Graphic Pen” and apply the following options:

5

Layer Mask

Click OK and if you like, admire the cool little effect thus far created. Now comes the layer mask part, which is the real magic of making the photograph merge into the drawing. Select “Layer, Add Layer Mask, Reveal All”.

6

Linear Gradient

Now, grab your gradient tool. Set the gradient to linear, and make sure it’s picking up your black and white foreground/background colors. Somewhere near the middle of the image, begin your gradient and drag it outside the right of the image. What happens is that the layer mask allows some of the photograph layer’s color to shine through the drawing layer. Play with the length and starting point of the gradient until you have the effect you like – my final image is below.
